The Jaisalmer fort in Rajasthan, famously known as Golden fort is the most unusual and the most amazing fort in Rajasthan. Its foundation stone was laid by Bhatti Chief Jaisal on the Trikata hill in1156 A.D. It is called Sonar Quila or the Golden fort, as it is built in yellow sandstone, which glows like molten gold, when touched by sunlight. This majestic view of the fort mesmerizes the beholder.
It is the second oldest fort in the state of Rajasthan, and has five floors with beautiful windows and balconies with intricate stonework. It is made in the architectural style of Rajput and Islam with intriguing carvings on the walls portraying the colorful culture of the place. 30 feet high walls made of yellow sandstone surround the golden fort, which enhances the spectacular view. The fort has four grand gates or Pols, Ganesh Pol, Akshya Pol, Suraj Pol and Hawa Pol that mark the grandiosity of the Fort.
The golden fort houses a good part of the Old City population, including craftsmen, artisans and merchants, who live their life amidst the wandering tourists. It also contains a number of Jain temples dating back to 12th and 15th century, and a number of Havelis built by the former merchants who built these mansions inspired by the fort itself. These old Havelis have a number of floor and rooms and are known for their fine cut work and beautiful designs. So a tour to Jaisalmer is always incomplete without a trip to the Golden fort that not only takes you through its rich culture and history, but also shows you some of the most incredible sights you would ever see in you whole life.
