The Jaigarh fort was originally known as Amber fort that incorporated the Palace complex of present Amber Fort within it. The two citadels were connected via fortified passages. The Jaigarh Fort can be reached driving uphills, 15 Km from Jaipur, above the Amber fort.
The fort of Jaigarh was the core strength to support the Rajput military as it served as the center of artillery production and served as the backbone to any military venture of the Kachwahas. Jaigarh's major tourist attraction is the world's largest cannon on the wheel - Jaivana, showcased at the fort. It is a 20 ft long barrel and the wheels are 9ft in diameter. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh fired the 50 ton weighed cannon just once in 1720. The cannonball shot fell near Chaksu that l formed a pond due to earth depression. The most fascinating feature was the water storage system that was built to store water for army men. It is believed that the bottom of the tanks was used to store the royal treasure. However former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ordered the excavation of Jaigarh tanks to recover the hidden treasure but the entire venture was a failure.
