Lohagarh fort in Bharatpur, Rajasthan is one of the strongest forts ever built in Indian history. It shows the strength and power of the rulers of this place. Jat ruler, Maharaja Suraj Mal, built it in 18th century. It is know as the invincible fort, as it has withstood numerous attacks by Mughals and British. In 1805 British tried to lay siege on the fort continuously for six weeks. Eventually they had to give up and compromise with the Rulers of Bharatpur.
The fort has two gates; the northern gate is called the Ashtdhaatu or eight-metalled gate having huge depictions of elephants on it, and the southern gate is called Chowburja or four-pillared gate. Other monuments in the fort, which are worth visiting, are Kishori Mahal, Mahal Khas, Kothi Khas and Moti Mahal. These monuments might not be called lavish but they depict strength and brilliance. In the vicinity of the fort are two memorials built to commemorate the victory over Mughals and British, they are Jawahar Burj and Fateh Burj. The fort comprises of a marvelous museum exhibiting ancient paintings and artifacts, guns, daggers, shields, clothes and ornaments, etc used by the Maharajas of that time. It also has an array of stuffed animals that were hunted by the Kings.
The Lohagarh fort or the Iron fort has always been a bastion protecting its rulers and inhabitants and its structure still tells the saga of its glorious past. The tourists while traversing the fort can feel the power and strength rested in its edifice. Hence a tour to Bharatpur is always incomplete without a visit to this undefeatable land.
