How to Reach Rajasthan
Air Services
Rajasthan has four domestic airports at Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur
and Jaisalmer. Of these, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur function throughout
the year, while Jaisalmer is used mainly during peak tourist season
(winter).
Jaipur : Jaipurs Sanganer Airport is 13 km from
the city center, and has connecting flights to major airport across
India, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Udaipur
and Jodhpur. Carriers arriving at Sanganer Airport include Indian
Airlines and Jet Airways. In addition to this, the airport has
daily flights (operated by Indian Airlines) connecting it to Dubai.
Jodhpur : Jodhpur Airport lies at a distance of 5 km from
the city center and is linked to Jaipur, Udaipur, New Delhi and
Mumbai by Air Sahara, Jet Airways and Indian Airlines.
Udaipur: Udaipurs Mharana Pratap Airport is 24 km
from the city, and is connected by Indian Airlines and Jet Airways
flights to Jaipur, Jodhpur, Mumbai and New Delhi.
Jaisalmer: Jaisalmer Airport is at a distance of 9 km
from the city center. Although Indian Airlines connects Jaisalmer
to other major cities like Delhi and Mumbai, flights are generally
confines only to peak tourist season, i.e., winter. Being very
close to Indias border with Pakistan, Jaisalmer Airport
is prone to closures every time tensions mount between India and
Pakistan.
Train Services
An extensive rail network connects the main cities of Rajasthan,
extending into the neighboring states of Haryana, Punjab, Uttar
Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujrat and Delhi as well. Important train
junctions along the broad gauge within Rajasthan include the capital
city of Jaipur, Udaipur Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Ajmer.
Jaipur: Being the state capital and an extremely popular
tourist destination, its no surprise that Jaipur has excellent
connections to and from the rest of India. There are a number
of trains coming to and from Jaipur.
Udaipur: Set in the heart of the cool green Aravali Hills,
Udaipur has fewer rail connections as compared to Jaipur, but
those that exist suffice. A no. of trains link the city to other
major cities in Rajasthan, including Jaipur, Ajmer and Chittaurgarh;
besides these, there are trains coming to and from Ahmedabad and
Delhi, outside the state.
Bikaner: Bikaner, on the north-western fringe of Rajasthan,
has broad gauge connections to all across the state. In addition,
it is linked by train to a fair number of Indias largest
cities. These include Delhi, Mumbai, Allahabad, Bhatinda, Kolkata
and Kalka.
Jaisalmer: Jaisalmer is the westernmost of Rajasthans
major cities, and lies in the heart of the Thar Desert. Although
Jaisalmer has an airport, flights connect to the city usually
only during winter, which means that effectively rail and road
are the main ways of getting to the city. Jaisalmer is linked
by a broad gauge rail network to Jaipur and Jodhpur, through which
it connects in turn to other major cities in India.
Jodhpur: Jodhpur is one of Rajasthans major railway
junctions, and has good connections to other stations within Rajasthan
as well as outside the state.
Ajmer: Ajmers position as one of Indias most-visited
pilgrimage centers makes it one of Rajasthans most important
railway junctions. Ajmers railway station has excellent
connections to towns and cities across Rajasthan, and is also
linked to a number of stations in other states of India, including
Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Bus Services
Rajasthan is connected by well maintained National Highways to the
neighboring states of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Gujrat
and Uttar Pradesh. The National Highways linking Rajasthan to these
states are NH15 (entering from Punjab in the north-west and exiting
Rajasthan in the south-west into Gujrat, via Ajmer, to Jaipur).
In addition to these, a number of state roads and district roads
crisscross the state, connecting all the major tourist destinations.
